Margot Hurlbert

Professor Margot Hurlbert is the Canada Research Chair, Tier 1, Climate Change, Energy, and Sustainability Policy at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. Margot’s experience includes 11 years of private practice, seven years at SaskPower as the Assistant General Counsel, Coordinating Lead Author with the IPCC Land and Climate Report (2019), and member Future Earth Working Group on Transformations. Margot is a Scientific Coordinator, Task Force on Earth System Law and a Senior Research Fellow of the Earth Systems Governance Project in the Netherlands.

Margot has a BA in administrations from the University of Regina, an LLB and LLM in Constitutional Law with a focus on energy, natural resources and Indigenous and environmental issues from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University and a PhD in Social and Behaviour Sciences form the University of Amsterdam. With over 100 publications, her research interests focus on energy, climate change, agriculture, and water. Margot has led and participated in many SSHRC, NSERC and IDRC research projects, serves on the editorial boards of international journals, and is the Lead of the Science, Technology and Innovation Research Cluster at Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy in Regina.
